Healthcare Ventilation Verification & Validation (HTM 03-01)

In healthcare premises, ventilation is used extensively in all types of facilities to provide a safe, hygienic and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

Specialised ventilation must be provided in primary patient treatment areas to ensure compliance with quality assurance standards. These areas include:

  • Operating Theatres
  • Critical Care Units
  • Sterile Services Departments
  • Pharmacies

The Department of Health have produced HTM 03-01 - “Specialised ventilation in healthcare premises” to address key issues relating to the design, operation and maintenance of healthcare ventilation systems. Some of the requirements outlined in HTM 03-01 (Parts A & B) are:

    Critical Ventilation Systems

    (Including pre 2007/8 theatres)
  • Validation testing of New Build conventional and

    Ultra-Clean Ventilation (UCV)

  • Prevention and control of

    healthcare related infections

  • Minimum design requirements for

    Air Handling Units (AHU)

with regard to safe access for routine inspection and maintenance and the control of Legionella
  • Controlling exposure to

    harmful organisms, toxic and anesthetic
