About Us

HBI was founded in 1981 to serve the needs of commercial building owners and managers.  With more than a quarter of a century of experience inspecting thousands of buildings throughout the world, we help our clients build value into their assets, retain/attract tenants (or employees), brand their organizations within the marketplace, and protect themselves from liability. Our client base includes property owners, building managers, developers, architects, engineers, and government agencies. Building types include office, medical, educational, institutional, and hospitality.

Until the  early 1980's, there were no companies specializing in treating indoor air quality problems. But when outbreaks of unexplained  illnesses in buildings began to occur in greater frequency, it became clear that specialists were needed to deal with this burgeoning problem. In 1981, Healthy Buildings International (HBI) became one of the first such companies in the United States.

Healthy Buildings International developed the technology to diagnose and treat sick buildings through the use of high-tech instruments, analytical equipment, and laboratory analyses, and pioneered the "building systems approach" in the prevention of IAQ problems. In the years since 1981, HBI has inspected over 4,000 major buildings encompassing over 500 million square feet for over 600 separate clients in 45 countries throughout the world. The company has expanded to operate successful offices outside the major metropolitan areas of Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles, London, Belfast, Glasgow and Sydney.

Corporate Vision
Healthy Buildings International, Inc. (HBI) is dedicated to meeting the indoor environmental consulting needs of the commercial real estate industry. With a pragmatic and problem solving approach, HBI has become the world leader in our field.

Our Proactive Approach

In the early years, Healthy Buildings International's work was comprised mainly of reactive work. Building owners and property managers, faced with the repercussions of building related environmental problems, commissioned HBI to solve the problems before the situation worsened. Toward the end of the decade HBI developed the concept of ongoing proactive monitoring programs for indoor air quality — a concept, which today is being adopted as standard operating procedure throughout the property management and facility management communities.

Besides instituting the benefits of a "prevention over cure" technical strategy, Healthy Buildings International effectively positions these programs for its clients as a powerful communication and managerial tool. This tool invariably brings the organizations represented enhanced public relations and marketability.

Today the majority of Healthy Buildings International's business is proactive, with hundreds of clients around the world who rely on HBI to achieve their indoor air quality goals. Most of HBI's business relationships are ongoing and constantly expanding as firms' portfolios grow and they desire the benefits of Healthy Buildings International’s proactive IAQ program for all their building occupants.

Government Endorsement

In February 2000, the U.S. General Services Administration demonstrated their endorsement of HBI’s protocols, technical competence and value, by adding HBI’s standard Proactive IAQ Inspection and Monitoring Program to GSA schedules on a global basis. (GSA Federal Supply Schedule Contract # GS-10F-0125K refers.) This contract was extended for a further five years in February 2005. Since we are “On-Schedule”, all US government building management and/or procurement executives, on a world-wide basis, do not need to competitively bid the service desired, knowing that as an approved scheduled contractor both our company and our services are pre-qualified.

Additionally, GSA management knows that an “On-Schedule” contractor has been through a rigorous process that involves investigation into: organizational stability, industry reputation, financial soundness, and technical competency.

In short Healthy Buildings International, Inc is a firm with experience, as demonstrated by our Management Team and the years they have been with HBI.USA : HBI East Coast StaffUSA : HBI West Coast Staff
